Let's view Hsu's Ginseng Farm during each season
Spring
As the winter snow disappears and spring emerges, growers rush to cover the gardens with shade cloth. This is important, because if the sunlight hits directly on the ginseng for a long period of time, they will die. Throughout the growing process, the precious plants are tendered daily to insure the highest quality American Ginseng.
Summer
The crew works all summer preparing the virgin soil for planting. First the ground is plowed, dragged and leveled. The posts are pounded into the ground and the beds are made. Finally, the seed is planted. The garden is then covered with straw to control weeds and protect the young plants from the cold winter.
Autumn...
Also a time to harvest after about 4 years of cultivation
With planting completed, the harvest begins in mid September to the end of October after about 4 years of cultivation. Harvesting, like much of the growing process, is very labor intensive because it is done by hand.
Winter
The final step in the growing process is preparing the garden for the winter snow. Meanwhile, the harvested roots are washed and sorted to remove any bad roots. The roots travel up the conveyer and are loaded into racks in preparation for drying. The drying process takes 12 to 14 days under the skillful eyes of the operator. After the roots are dried, they are trimmed, graded and inspected by hand to remove any bad roots once more. This laborious process insures high quality, uniform and disease-free roots.
